Chit Chat is your chance to mix 'n mingle virtually with movers and shakers in the Fashion Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, and Entertainment industries.

This month's Chit Chat guest is our very own talented Graphic Designer Marianne Alfonso. A FIDM Grad, Marianne works on both print and web design projects for FashionClub.com and FIDM.edu. She's designed some of the fun fashion and career related articles you'll find throughout FashionClub.com.

1. How did you get into the Graphic Design industry?

MARIANNE: I always loved fashion, so I decided to attend FIDM. During my first quarter, I realized that Graphic Design was the perfect way to combine my interest in computers and technology with my love for fashion.

2. What was the most important thing you learned as a student at FIDM?

MARIANNE: Actually, I learned that work experience is essential. I began working as an intern in FIDM's Publications department almost immediately after deciding to study Graphic Design. Interning is a key element of what FIDM can offer its students. Once I graduated, FIDM hired me full time as a Jr. Graphic Designer.

3. What's the best part of your job?

MARIANNE: I love designing for FashionClub.com because I have a lot of freedom. I basically start with a blank page and then find interesting, engaging ways to integrate the assets (copy and photographs) and get the audience excited.

4. How important is communication in your job?

MARIANNE: Communication is very important. For one, I'm the last person to see my work before it goes to the printer or online. I have to make sure that it's accurate. Also, I have to be able to articulate my ideas to the Art Director and the Marketing department at FIDM.

5. What inspires you?

MARIANNE: Art is my number one inspiration. I love to look at what other people are doing creatively. Fashion trends are also a big inspiration.

6. Tell us something we might not know about being a Graphic Designer.

MARIANNE: Well, besides always keeping up with the new software programs, you have to research the most interesting topics to create innovative, relevant designs. For instance, I need to know a lot about my audience, teens, or if I'm doing something about music or a particular movie, I need to know about that topic so that I can design for it.

With a degree in Graphic Design, you could create movie posters, invitations, and websites for clients in fun industries like Entertainment and Fashion. Find out more about the Graphic Design major at FIDM.edu.
