THIS MONTH’S QUESTION:
I love fashion, but I really do not wear it. Does that mean I won’t be successful in the fashion industry?
Dear Michelle,
Relax! You don’t have to be a walking fashion icon to be a mover and shaker in the Fashion Industry. Even though people think of Fashion Design first when they think of being a part of the fashion world, the truth is that there are zillions of careers in fashion that don’t involve design.
For instance, you could study trends, and report on them for a trend-prediction company (other fashion companies pay for this information!) You could major in Merchandise Marketing and become a Buyer for a chain of stores, or own your own boutique. You could become a Merchandise Product Developer and adapt shoe styles to a target market, like teen girls or kids. Apparel Manufacturing Management can teach you the skills to own your own clothing company. Graphic Designers design the hang-tags and logos that distinguish your favorite brands. You could pursue Theatre Costume Design and bring fantasies to life on the stage and screen. And don’t rule out Fashion Design completely. Lots of Fashion Designers don’t wear the clothes they design, including male Designers who design women’s wear.
No matter what your style statement, there’s a place in the fashion world for you!
